Sorghum

Soil insects:

  • CRUISER or GUACHO
  • ECO – T [Trico derma] or MYCO TECH.
  • Treat seed with MARINURE DS or SEED START!
  • Can be used with CRUISER or GAUCHO!!

Why seed treatment?

  • Protects seed against insect attack.
  • Root development.
  • Fertilizer utilization especially Phosphorus and Nitrogen.
  • Drought resistant and recovery after drought.
  • Water utilization.

PRE-EMERGENCE HERBICIDES FOR GRASS CONTROL

  • Relay or Metagan Gold can be used on Sorghum if the seed was treated with Concept.
  • Concept must be included in Seed treatment process.
  • Apply Herbicide directly after planting preferable 3 days from last soil movement.

POST-EMERGENCE WEED CONTROL

  • WEED-OFF at 2-3 litre per ha.
  • GESAPRIM SUPER
  • Excellent control. No scorch! No Phyto!!

NB: Apply on weeds 2-4 leaf stage!

FERTILIZER AND FOLIAR FEED SUGGESTION

  • Soil in Panda inherently problematic.
  • High Calcium and Magnesium.
  • Low percentage Potassium. High pH.

Consider the following Fertilizer / Foliar programs

  • MAP + UREA [ECO BLACK UREA] treated with ZINK SULPHATE. Can be coated!
  • Use of MULTI MICRO GRAIN in the furrow.
  • 20.7.3 or 5.1.5 as a compound granular fertilizer.

Foliar Feed

First application:

  • MARINURE D.S 500 ml per ha + KNO3 1-2 kg per ha. Second Application (1-2 weeks before Flag leaf):
  • MANIPLEX B or
  • ULTRABOR + KNO3 or
  • KNO3 + MULTI MICRO GRAIN or
  • EASY FLOWER AND FRUIT 2-3 kg per ha.

STALK BORER

  • Chilo and Basiola are present in Botswana!
  • Early application of Insecticides is extremely important! Avoid high rates of low quality products!
  • Reaching the insects is paramount to the success of the treatment! Use AQUAWETT!!!
  • Using a quality wetter is extremely important!
  • Water quality and pH are very important!
  • Use KARATE ZEON or AMPLIGO or BULLDOG or DECIS FORTE [Avoid low quality Pyrethroids!!]
  • Consider AMPLIGO as a new generation insecticide!!!
  • Systemic product eg. ONCOL SUPER.
  • Preferably the first application must be done before the infestation is noticed but before 2 % infestation!!! Usually 4-6 leaf stage.
  • Use the highest water volume that is practical!
  • Low water volumes are the reason for poor control!!!!!!

NORTHERN LEAF BLIGHT

  • Early application, before signs is extremely important. Usually with second Stalk borer application.
  • Protect Flag leaf at all cost!
  • ARTEA
  • AMISTAR TOP
  • Both can be used with REGISTERED Stalk borer products and Foliar feeds as discussed.

APHIDS

  • The use of quality pyrethroids e.g KARATE ZEON can limit the occurrence of Aphids!
  • APHOX or DEMETON EC or DIMETHOATE.

BOLLWORM

  • Methomex 200 gram per ha.
  • Power up or Velocity Glypho at 0.5% of water volume will increase efficacy!

REMEMBER ALL APPLICATIONS:

  • Maximum water volume.
  • pH correction.
  • Use Aquawett when needed!
